Fun fact: this originally wasn’t red! It got painted much later on. There’s another lighthouse 42 miles or so north; these two are seemingly the most remote lighthouses in the USA.
When I’d visit here as a kid, the interior was always closed off to the public. In the last year or so they apparently finally opened up the base. Was cool to finally see inside!
The Ocracoke Island lighthouse is the second oldest lighthouse in the country. Neat bit of history.
